LOVE when 5th grade starts observational drawings in class and they start to notice such detail! It really improves their artwork and builds confidence. These 5th graders learned about contour lines in art class this quarter and practiced by looking at their hands, shoes and each other! As we move on to our final draft we are combining ideas to generate an innovative idea for art-making and incorporating shapes as our background. The visual outcomes are always a hit!
Fine Arts Booster
Family Paint Night
Fine Arts Boosters supported our 3rd Family Paint Night here at Big Hollow Middle School and it was a wintery hit! We had about 50 people come out and paint with me in November, creating unique versions of a winter forest. Kids and parents both did an amazing job! Can't wait to see families come back in March for our next event!

BHMS Dance
The BHMS Dance Team's FIRST competition is complete! This group did such a great job performing the best they could on Saturday at the Woodland Middle School Pom Team Competition. We were so excited to be apart of such a great day and placing 5th out of 11 teams was a great success for this team! Way to go dancers!!!!
Choice Based Art is in FULL SWING here at BHMS. Students are beginning working on their first project with the material of choice. We began our year off with discussing how to create an idea with depth. Students have the option of flexible seating in art so that they are comfortable and creative in the space they work.
BHMS MURAL
Summer 2017 was a BUSY one for Miss Ryan! After teaching summer school STEAM camp with Mrs. Cullotta (look for it again next summer!) I set off on the mural adventure! At my last school I had painted a few student incorporated murals, but this was the first one I painted by myself. I was excited to design and represent the Fine Arts in this new project. Home Depot in Volo, IL was a HUGE help in getting all the paint and seals correct while I developed the images and concept. Over 3 weeks in July and August I painted with the help of Mrs. Cullotta and Miss Reil who were excellent assistants!
This mural helps represent the amazing electives that BHMS offers such as computer science, art, STEM, choir and band. These classes enrich students lives and offer new learning styles that connect to students passions and interests. It was an honor to paint and I hope to continue spreading the BHMS spirit through the school.

Advanced Art CLub
What a great group of students showed up on the last day of Advanced Art Club! During the first half of the school year, 32 5th and 6th grade students showed up early Wednesday mornings for an hour to learn about new and different styles of art. We used sketchbooks to organize our ideas and continue creating outside of art. These extremely talented students show great potential and were a pleasure to create with these past 4 months. We ended our time together with a group selflie of course!
Fairview 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd graders participated in a Starbucks Cup Design Competition during Miss Ryan's art classes. After creating, students voted for their favorite design and we had two winners in each class. The whole school viewed these beautiful, unique designs during the month of December and picked their favorite with a winner being announced before winter break. These wonderful, colorful cups were on display in the middle of Woodfield Mall at the Starbucks kiosk from December 18th- January 3rd. Great job creating such unique, holiday, colorful designs!
Congrats to Tamia, Kayla, Lupita and Rohan for receiving the most votes during our voting! Way to go!

Words say so much
During Art Enrichment this trimester, 5th and 6th grade students used quotes and words to visually display positive messages. With the popularity of social media and people using Instagram and Twitter to show what they feel or think, we considered color, composition and language to display a quote. Students collaborated with partners and used previous photography knowledge of play with filters and zoom. These photos were hung in the hallways to brighten peoples day and promote the arts!
MOVEMENT: Visual flow through a composition; eye moving from object to object.
Students in 5th and 6th grade studied movement in artwork, specifically photography. After discussing light, movement, composition and camera abilities students experimented with the panoramic feature on our Sony cyber shot cameras. With a partner students created movement in photos by jumping, running, tumbling and more. These exciting photographs were experimental and interesting... all the credit goes to the photographers and models!

Let's get messy! In 1st and 2nd grade we talked about primary colors while looking at Piet Mondrian's art work. Inspired by his simple colors and shapes the students worked together to paper mache boxes with red, yellow, blue, white and black squares and rectangles. These amazing pieces are on display in the school library!

SCHOOLS OUT..... Till Summer School Starts!
This summer I was lucky enough to work for Barrington district 220 and experimented with some new Clay, Painting and Weaving projects. The kids were open to new ideas and creative choice. Minions... how can you not LOVE the Minion clay projects.

Light Graffiti..... Say WHAT???
As a reward for awesome behavior in art class, classes participated in this light graffiti project. In groups students picked out a glow stick, flashlight or LED light to move and dance around with. With the lights off and the area cleared, I changed the setting of my camera and captured all the light movement in the room. Some groups spelled out words or just danced around like wild things! These beautiful photos were so fun and a great incentive for positive behavior in art.
Keep Calm and Carry On
After learning about the design history of the iconic poster Keep Calm and Carry On in 5th and 6th grade, students created their own ending to the poster and considered color, logo and alignment. Each year I am so impressed with what they can accomplish and create! Such a great visual that students can keep and hang in their room. Enjoy this years creations!

Earth Day Photography with Digital Art Club
5th and 6th grade students in Miss Ryan’s Digital Art club were exploring the use of the new digital cameras outside this month. After looking at landscapes and images that support and encourage Earth Day, students went outside and were inspired! Here are a few of the wonderful photos students took!
